Mahopac Middle School eighth graders recently showcased their creativity, problem-solving skills and craftsmanship through a hands-on DIY project in teacher Scott Hocutt’s STEM/TECH class. Students selected projects based on their own interests, either choosing from a list of ideas provided by their teacher or conducting independent research to develop their own concepts. The finished projects reflected a wide range of interests and talents, including games, clocks, 3-D landscape art, an American flag display and many other unique creations.
Before beginning construction, students were required to create or source detailed design plans and receive approval to ensure their projects were feasible. They then applied the skills they developed throughout the year, utilizing workshop tools, machines and materials to transform their ideas into finished products. The project challenged students to plan carefully and demonstrate the technical knowledge they acquired in the classroom.
