Middle School Penny Wars

Mahopac Middle School students once again came together to support a meaningful cause through the school’s annual Penny Wars fundraiser, organized by the Positive Action Club.

This year’s winning team was Team 6A, earning top honors after two weeks of friendly competition and schoolwide participation. In total, the fundraiser brought in more than $2,000, continuing a strong tradition of giving back to those in need.

During Penny Wars, each team collects points by adding pennies and dollar bills to their own containers, while silver coins can be used to “sabotage” other teams by subtracting points. The result is a spirited competition that encourages both teamwork and generosity.

Mahopac Middle School reading specialist and Positive Action Club adviser Christine McNeill said this year’s event stood out in several ways. “We did a bit better this year than in past years,” McNeill said. “It was also the first time that no team finished in the negative, which was exciting to see.”

McNeill added that the competition was lively throughout the duration of the fundraiser, particularly between some of the early leaders. “There was definitely some sabotage between teams 6C and 8A, especially after they were leading early on,” she said. “Overall, it was great to see all teams stay positive and engaged.”

Proceeds from the fundraiser will benefit the JennaJackPack Project, an organization that provides comfort and support to children coping with the loss of a parent or sibling. The project honors the memory of Jenna Nolan, a former Mahopac Middle School student remembered for her kindness, compassion and the positive impact she had on those around her. Her legacy continues to inspire efforts to support children facing difficult times.

Through their participation, Mahopac Middle School students once again demonstrated how small contributions can come together to make a meaningful impact.
