Austin Road Elementary School students experienced a creative blend of music, science and environmental education during a recent interactive “Bash the Trash – Sustainable Sounds” assembly. The performance introduced students to a world where everyday discarded items were transformed into musical instruments.
Performers Ian, Jordan and Rachel showcased a wide variety of instruments they created using materials such as plastic bottles, metal cans and pieces of discarded piping. As they played, students were amazed by the range of sounds produced from items that would normally end up in the trash.
More than just a musical performance, the program served as a hands-on STEAM learning experience. The performers explained how sound is created through vibration and demonstrated how different materials can produce unique tones and rhythms. By combining science concepts with live music, the presentation helped students better understand how sound waves work in a fun and memorable way.
Throughout the assembly, the performers also encouraged students to think differently about the materials they use every day. The program highlighted the importance of the “3 Rs” – reduce, reuse and recycle – while showing how creativity can give new life to objects that might otherwise be thrown away.
The engaging educational program was made possible through the support of the Austin Road PTO, bringing an inspiring message about innovation, sustainability and the connections between science, music and the environment.
