Lakeview Students Find Inspiration for Winning Snowplow Name

Lakeview Elementary School kindergartner Cassandra Dever and first grader Maggie Ford were among the winners of Putnam County’s first-ever snowplow-naming contest with their seasonal entry, “Frosty.”

The winning name was submitted to the Putnam County Department of Public Works by Lakeview librarian Maria Bohan, who helped spark the idea during a classroom reading. Bohan had recently shared the classic children’s book, “Katy and the Big Snow” by Virginia Lee Burton with the students, which led to a discussion about snowplows and the important role they play during winter storms. Inspired by the story, the girls brainstormed ideas and settled on the cheerful name “Frosty.”

Dever and Ford were thrilled to learn that their submission had been selected and would be displayed on a county snowplow.

“This is such a wonderful example of how literacy, creativity and real-world learning can come together,” Lakeview Elementary Principal Elizabeth Blessing said. “Maggie and Cassandra showed imagination and enthusiasm, and we’re so proud of them.”

The project not only encouraged creativity but also helped students learn more about winter safety and the vital work performed by local highway crews throughout the season.
