Prior to the winter break, Putnam County Executive Kevin Byrne, Department of Public Works Commissioner Thomas Feighery, Crew Chief Craig Moran and members of the Putnam County Department of Public Works visited local schools to surprise students and announce winners of the county’s first-ever snowplow naming contest.
Among the winners were Mahopac Central School District students Cassandra Dever and Maggie Ford from Lakeview Elementary School, whose joint entry, “Frosty,” was selected as a winning name, as well as Fulmar Road Elementary School student Adem Shala, who earned honors for his entry, “Mr. 67.”
In total, four snowplows were emblazoned with the contest’s winning names. In addition to visiting Lakeview and Fulmar Road elementary schools, Byrne and Feighery also stopped at Putnam Valley Elementary School and John F. Kennedy Elementary School, where other winning entries included “White Tiger” and “Darth Blader.”
Beyond celebrating student creativity, the contest also served as an educational opportunity to teach children about snowplow operations and winter road safety.
“This was a fun and meaningful way to connect with students and celebrate their imagination and creativity while also highlighting the incredible work done every day by our Department of Public Works,” Byrne said. “The snowplow naming contest gave us the chance to talk with students about how they can help us keep roads safe in the winter. I want to thank our entire Department of Public Works team for making this such a successful and educational experience.”
