Lakeview Elementary School in the Mahopac Central School District welcomed local veterans from the Mahopac VFW and American Legion for a special Veterans Day celebration on Nov. 10, where students expressed appreciation through music, artwork, handwritten letters and a spirited parade.
The event began with coffee and pastries as veterans read cards and letters written by students in grades K-5. Fifth graders composed thoughtful messages of gratitude and several were selected to read their letters aloud, reflecting on courage, service and the sacrifices made to protect others.
As part of the celebration, fourth graders performed a patriotic song to honor the guests, and third graders presented a framed piece of artwork featuring thumbprints from every student in the grade, symbolizing their appreciation.
“I couldn’t be prouder of our students and staff,” Lakeview Principal Elizabeth Blessing said. “Our entire school community came together to honor our veterans in a celebration that truly reflected our deep appreciation and respect for their service. The music, letters and artwork all came from the heart and it was a powerful reminder of the values we strive to instill in our students every day.”
One of the honored guests included James “Jimmy” Dipelesi, a World War II veteran, whose presence provided students with a meaningful connection to living history.
The event concluded with a schoolwide parade, where students lined the hallways waving American flags and cheering for the veterans as they walked the building. Smiles, applause and warm messages filled the hallways as Lakeview students demonstrated their thanks and respect.
“This was an incredibly meaningful morning,” Superintendent of Schools Frank Miele said. “These veterans exemplify the sacrifices made so that we may live in a free country. Our students honored their service with sincerity and I could not be more proud of them. I am grateful to the Lakeview staff for creating such a heartfelt celebration.”
Lakeview Elementary plans to continue this Veterans Day celebration each year as a meaningful tradition that strengthens the connection between students and the community.
