Fulmar Road Elementary School students were treated to a special visit from children’s author and illustrator Daniel Jude Miller, who shared his personal journey as a young artist and encouraged students to embrace creativity, practice and perseverance.
Miller told students that his love of drawing began at a young age, when he filled pages with pictures of helicopters, airplanes, dragons, dinosaurs, knights and skeletons. In fourth grade, he decided he wanted to become an artist and committed himself to learning new skills and improving through constant practice.
As he shared examples of his early artwork, students “oohed” and “ahhed,” seeing how his drawings evolved over time. Miller explained that practicing a little bit leads to small improvement, but practicing consistently can lead to significant growth. He shared how his dedication allowed him to progress from drawing cartoons, sports scenes and ninja dinosaurs to creating superheroes and more advanced illustrations.
Miller later attended a specialized school where he was able to focus on art throughout the day, further developing his skills and confidence as an artist. His message to students emphasized that creativity grows with effort, patience and a willingness to keep learning.
“It truly was an honor to be invited to Fulmar Road to read my stories, show my artwork and have the opportunity to inspire a new generation of artists and storytellers,” Miller said.
The visit left Fulmar Road students inspired and excited, reinforcing the idea that with practice and passion, creativity can grow into something extraordinary.
