Fulmar Road fourth graders recently took part in an engaging hands-on program led by PNW BOCES naturalist Sam Pierce as part of their Native American studies unit.
The presentation focused on the Lenape people, the Indigenous group native to the Hudson Valley region. After an introduction to Lenape culture and daily life prior to European contact, students rotated through interactive learning stations where they examined traditional tools, regalia and clothing, and musical instruments. Pierce explained how the different symbols Native Americans wear on their regalia are special to each individual and help tell the story of their ancestors. Students also explored foods, games, crafts and storytelling traditions, gaining insight into how the Lenape used natural resources and worked cooperatively within their communities.
The experience offered students a meaningful connection to the history they are studying, bringing the curriculum to life in a thoughtful and engaging way.
