Mahopac High School senior recognized as National Merit Commended Student

Mahopac High School Principal Patrick Keevins recently presented senior Felix Copp with a National Merit “Letter of Commendation” for his outstanding academic achievement.

About 34,000 students across the nation have been recognized as Commended Students in the 2026 National Merit Scholarship Program. These students placed among the top 50,000 high scorers of more than 1.5 million students who entered the competition by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Copp said he was surprised and grateful when he learned about the honor.

“At first I didn’t realize how significant it was,” Copp said. “Once I looked into it, I felt proud and thankful to be recognized.”

An accomplished student with a passion for science, Copp said his favorite subjects at Mahopac High School are chemistry and physics. He credited teacher Dennis Quackenbush for playing a key role in his success, noting that “he is very supportive toward his students and teaches valuable skills.”

Outside of class, Copp participates in the Gaming Club, Model United Nations and the National Honor Society, and he fences competitively at the Fencing Academy of Westchester.

Looking back on his journey, Copp said he hopes other students see his story as a reminder that growth and change are always possible.

“I struggled as a student in middle school,” he said. “But through determination and effort, I was able to become a top student and earn this commendation. It’s always possible to change your mindset and rise from where you are.”

Keevins praised Copp’s achievement and character, noting that the recognition is a testament to both his academic ability and his resilience.

“Felix’s achievement is a reflection of his hard work, curiosity and perseverance,” Keevins said. “We’re incredibly proud of him and all that he’s accomplished.”
