In a creative twist on phonics practice, first graders at Fulmar Road Elementary School recently constructed their own “Vowel Towns" as part of their Word Builder unit. Some students teamed up, while others worked independently to design imaginative towns filled with roads, buildings, parks and more.
Once their towns were built, the students used their growing knowledge of letters and vowel teams (like ai, ee, and oa) to label the different parts of their town. From a train station to a restaurant and pool, every label was an opportunity to apply what they’ve learned in a meaningful and fun way.
This hands-on project helped students connect word building to real-world settings, making phonics both playful and powerful.
