Cell Phone Policy News

Dear Mahopac Community,

I hope you are enjoying a safe and restful summer. I'm writing to share important information about a new statewide policy that will take effect in all New York public schools beginning with the 2025-2026 school year - and what it means for us here in Mahopac.

As required by the New York State Education Department, our Board of Education has adopted a "bell-to-bell" cell phone policy that limits the use of smartphones and other internet-enabled personal devices during the entire school day, including lunch and time between classes. The goal is simple but important: to help students remain focused on learning, build stronger face-to-face connections, and support their overall well-being.

While technology plays an important role in our lives, I've seen firsthand, over my 39 years in this district, the difference it makes when students are fully present in the classroom, on the field, and with their peers. This policy will help us create safe, distraction-free learning environments where our students can do their best work.

Here's what families should know:

  • Prohibited devices: Smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other internet-enabled devices not provided by the district.

  • Elementary schools: Students are discouraged from bringing devices. Any devices must be silenced and stored in lockers or the main office.

  • Middle and high schools: Students must silence devices and store them in lockers or the main office for the entire day.

  • Exceptions may be granted for documented medical needs, translation purposes, family care responsibilities, or when required by an IEP or 504 plan.

  • Parent communication: During the school day, parents may contact students through the school's main office, nurse or counselor.

Students and families should expect to receive specific guidelines and procedures from their respective schools within the district prior to the start of the school year. The full MCSD Cell Phone Policy is available by visiting our district website.

Thank you for your partnership as we work together to give our students the best possible environment for learning and growth.

Sincerely,
Frank Miele
Acting Superintendent of Schools
